74 Best Backup Softwares and Services
Best Backup Software and Services: Have you ever backed up anything? If you have ever done a backup then you will know about backup. If you are using a computer or a mobile device and if any of your important data is lost, then we are very concerned about it because this data is very important for us.
In such a situation, if there is a backup of those data, then we can recover one more data from it. By the way, if I talk about backup, it is a process using which multiple copies of the original data are made, so that they can be used when the original data is lost. In such times, backup is very useful for us.
Along with this, even if the data has to be accessed from some other place, even then backup is very useful for us. Backup software helps you to make copies of files, databases and hard drives which prevents your data loss. This software restores the original content in case of data loss.
What is backup?
A backup is a copy of more than one file, which is created according to a choice so that we can use them whenever the original data is lost or becomes unusable.

Carbonite Safe

Carbonite, Inc. is an American company that offers an online backup service, available to Windows and macOS users. In 2019 it was acquired by Canadian software company, OpenText. It backs up documents, e-mails, music, photos, and settings. It is named after carbonite, the fictional substance used to freeze Han Solo in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Carbonite was the first such service to offer unlimited backup space for a fixed price. Previously, all online backup services were priced by the gigabyte; many other vendors have since changed to an unlimited model.
Carbonite offers two separate lines of products: Carbonite Home and Home Office for individuals, families, and one- or two-person businesses; and Carbonite Small Business for businesses with three or more computers. At one time in its history, Carbonite was named “Best Windows Backup Tool” by Lifehacker, “Labs Winner” by PC Pro, and “Editor’s Choice” by NextAdvisor, but received only “two mice” in a MacWorld review putting it second to last.

Google Drive

Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google. Launched on April 24, 2012, Google Drive allows users to store files in the cloud (on Google’s servers), synchronize files across devices, and share files. In addition to a web interface, Google Drive offers apps with offline capabilities for Windows and macOS computers, and Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Google Drive encompasses Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, which are a part of the Google Docs Editors office suite that permits collaborative editing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, forms, and more. Files created and edited through the Google Docs suite are saved in Google Drive.
Google Drive offers users 15 GB of free storage through Google One. Google One also offers 100 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 10 TB, 20 TB, and 30 TB, offered through optional paid plans. Files uploaded can be up to 5 terabytes in size. Users can change privacy settings for individual files and folders, including enabling sharing with other users or making content public. On the website, users can search for an image by describing its visuals, and use natural language to find specific files, such as “find my budget spreadsheet from last December”.
The website and Android app offer a Backups section to see what Android devices have data backed up to the service, and a completely overhauled computer app released in July 2017 allows for backing up specific folders on the user’s computer. A Quick Access feature can intelligently predict the files users need.
Google Drive is a key component of Google Workspace, Google’s monthly subscription offering for businesses and organizations that operated as G Suite until October 2020. As part of select Google Workspace plans, Drive offers unlimited storage, advanced file audit reporting, enhanced administration controls, and greater collaboration tools for teams.
Following the launch of the service, Google Drive’s privacy policy was heavily criticized by some members of the media. Google has one set of Terms of Service and Privacy Policy agreements that cover all of its services, meaning that the language in the agreements grants the company broad rights to reproduce, use, and create derivative works from content stored on Google Drive. While the policies also confirm that users retain intellectual property rights, privacy advocates raised concerns that the licenses grant Google the right to use the information and data to customize the advertising and other services Google provides. In contrast, other members of the media noted that the agreements were no worse than those of competing cloud storage services, but that the competition uses “more artful language” in the agreements, and also stated that Google needs the rights in order to “move files around on its servers, cache your data, or make image thumbnails”.
As of July 2018, Google Drive had over one billion active users, and as of September 2015 it had over one million organizational paying users. As of May 2017, there were over two trillion files stored on the service.

Back In Time

Back In Time is a backup application for Linux. It has versions that integrate favorably in GNOME and KDE SC 4 and is available directly from the repositories of many Linux distributions. Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), it is free software.
Back In Time uses rsync as backend and has the characteristic feature of using hard links for files which are identical in snapshots at different times, thus using disk space just once for files that remained unchanged. It is possible to use several backup profiles, e.g. for backups on different hard disks and also to create schedules. Symbolic links can be backed up, both absolute and relative ones, but hard links cannot be treated as such due to the used backup method. Back In Time also supports encryption of backups and backup over SSH.
Advantages of the hard link method are that it is easy to look at snapshots of the system at different times and also easy to remove old snapshots compared to incremental backup methods which save difference information between consecutive backup times. However, a drawback of Back In Time is that it does not allow for compression, and requires file systems that support hard links on the backup location.

Backup and Restore

Backup and Restore (formerly Windows Backup and Restore Center) is a backup component of Windows Vista and later versions of Microsoft Windows that allows users to create or restore backups of files and create and restore system images to repair data in the event of data corruption, hard disk drive failure, or malware infection. It is integrated with the Shadow Copy feature first observed in Windows Server 2003 and it is the replacement for NTBackup included since Windows NT 3.51.
Backup and Restore functionality is differentiated based on Windows Vista editions or Windows 7 editions where additional features for backup management are available. Scheduled backup functionality, for example, requires at least the Home Premium edition of both operating systems. Windows Vista Business—or Windows 7 Professional—and successive editions support creating and restoring system images.
Backup and Restore became deprecated with the release of Windows 8.0 and File History; all of its functionality was still available, but it would no longer be developed. In Windows 8.1, all user interface functionality excluding system image creation functionality was removed. Windows 10 reinstates Backup and Restore while maintaining the File History feature of Windows 8.0.

BackupPC

BackupPC is a free disk-to-disk backup software suite with a web-based frontend. The cross-platform server will run on any Linux, Solaris, or UNIX-based server. No client is necessary, as the server is itself a client for several protocols that are handled by other services native to the client OS. In 2007, BackupPC was mentioned as one of the three most well known open-source backup software, even though it is one of the tools that are “so amazing, but unfortunately, if no one ever talks about them, many folks never hear of them”.Data deduplication reduces the disk space needed to store the backups in the disk pool. It is possible to use it as D2D2T solution, if the archive function of BackupPC is used to back up the disk pool to tape. BackupPC is not a block-level backup system like Ghost4Linux but performs file-based backup and restore. Thus it is not suitable for backup of disk images or raw disk partitions.BackupPC incorporates a Server Message Block (SMB) client that can be used to back up network shares of computers running Windows. Paradoxically, under such a setup the BackupPC server can be located behind a NAT’d firewall while the Windows machine operates over a public IP address. While this may not be advisable for SMB traffic, it is more useful for web servers running Secure Shell (SSH) with GNU tar and rsync available, as it allows the BackupPC server to be stored in a subnet separate from the web server’s DMZ.
It is published under the GNU General Public License.

DeltaCopy

In general terms, DeltaCopy is an open source, fast incremental backup program. Let’s say you have to backup one file that is 500 MB every night. A normal file copy would copy the entire file even if a few bytes have changed. DeltaCopy, on the other hand, would only copy the part of file that has actually been modified. This reduces the data transfer to just a small fraction of 500 MB saving time and network bandwidth.

Duplicity

Duplicity is a software suite that provides encrypted, digitally signed, versioned, local or remote backup of files requiring little of the remote server. Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), Duplicity is free software.
Duplicity devises a scheme where the first archive is a complete (full) backup, and subsequent (incremental) backups only add differences from the latest full or incremental backup. Chains consisting of a full backup and a series of incremental backups can be recovered to the point in time that any of the incremental steps were taken. If any of the incremental backups are missing, then the incremental backups following it cannot be reconstructed. It does this using GnuPG, librsync, tar, and rdiff. To transmit data to the backup repository, it can use SSH/SCP/SFTP, local file access, rsync, FTP, Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Rackspace Cloud Files, and others.
Duplicity works best under Unix-like operating systems (such as Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X), though it can be used with Windows under Cygwin or the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Currently duplicity supports deleted files, full Unix permissions, directories, and symbolic links, fifos, and device files, but not hard links.

System Restore

System Restore is a feature in Microsoft Windows that allows the user to revert their computer’s state (including system files, installed applications, Windows Registry, and system settings) to that of a previous point in time, which can be used to recover from system malfunctions or other problems. First included in Windows Me, it has been included in all following desktop versions of Windows released since, excluding Windows Server. In Windows 10, System Restore is turned off by default and must be enabled by users in order to function. This does not affect personal files such as documents, music, pictures, and videos.
In prior Windows versions it was based on a file filter that watched changes for a certain set of file extensions, and then copied files before they were overwritten. An updated version of System Restore introduced by Windows Vista uses the Shadow Copy service as a backend (allowing block-level changes in files located in any directory on the volume to be monitored and backed up regardless of their location) and allows System Restore to be used from the Windows Recovery Environment in case the Windows installation no longer boots at all.

Time Machine

Time Machine is the backup mechanism of macOS, the desktop operating system developed by Apple. The software is designed to work with both local storage devices and network-attached disks, and is most commonly used with external disk drives connected using either USB or Thunderbolt. It was first introduced in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and incrementally refined in subsequent releases of macOS. Time Machine was revamped in macOS 11 Big Sur to support APFS, thereby enabling “faster, more compact, and more reliable backups” than were possible previously.
