The Indian Premier League (IPL for short) is a Twenty Twenty tournament run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The league was established in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) member Lalit Modi.
The IPL is the largest cricket league in the world and ranks sixth among all sports leagues. In 2010, the IPL became the first sports in the world whose event was broadcast live on YouTube. The brand value of the IPL was estimated by a division to be $ 3.5 billion in 2015 in the US. According to the BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed 11.5 lakh ₹ (US $ 182 million) to the GDP of the Indian economy.
13 teams have to compete since the league’s first season, six have won the title at least once. While Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad have won once and Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings three times and Kolkata Knight Riders, have won twice. As of 2014, the top three teams in the tournament qualified for the Champions League Twenty20. However, the Champions League Twenty20 was discontinued in 2015.
Currently, with eight teams, each team plays each other twice in a home and away round robin tournament. At the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams qualify for the finals. The winner of the top two teams in the first qualifier goes directly to the final, while the green team competes with the winner of the eliminator match between the third and fourth place teams in the second qualifier. The winner of the second preliminary round match is the final where the winner is crowned Indian Premier League champion.
